Computer Goes Black After Signing onto User (Vista)?

Ok so I just found out that my computer isn’t working today. I turned it on and it was making this scratchy kind of sound like when an earbud is going out or something on headphones. anyways so after I signed onto my user the taskbar thing on the bottom appeared for a little while then the whole screen went dark.
I have been trying all of these things like unplugging it and taking the battery out and everything but it still won’t work.
What can I do?
Also I’ve heard that going into Safe mode and switching to something works but I can’t even get into safe mode. When it’s loading and says “Please Wait” it just feezes.
If it comes to the worst I have a friend who knows someone who might be able to fix it but still I’m hoping that I can fix it myself.

Make sure that the battery is out for at least 2 minutes and that you don’t have your laptop plugged in.

If you’ve already done exactly that then plug it in and hold down the F8 key when power starts coming on and you should get some boot options to see if you can fix it in Safe Mode.

If you’re already doing that and Safe Mode is freezing then it might be time to try booting from a Recovery Disk or some other type of diagnostics disk.

The thing is, if you heard a weird noise then it could be a loose internal connection or a hardware failure. Oh…speaking of a hardware problem, make sure that all of your cables are in all of the way.
